Welcome to 2nd grade. My name is Mrs. Angela Tavares, and I am the second grade teacher. Some children, especially in the upper grades, will still call me Ms. England, which I will still answer to.
This is my 5th year at Cheverus. I have taught Title One, 4th grade, and 2nd grade in previous years. I have my degree in Elementary Education from Lesley University. Before coming to Cheverus, I taught at Saint Peters School, Chelsea Public Schools, and Watertown Public Schools. In Chelsea, I taught in Special Education, which remains a passion for me. When I first began teaching, I started in a second-grade classroom, and I love being back in 2nd grade again.
I look forward to working with your children.
Goals
To prepare your child for third grade
To share and learn from one another
To prepare your child for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
Typical Day
Mostly Math, Reading, English, Spelling, and Phonics in the morning.
Religion, Science, Social Studies, Writing, and Cursive are in the afternoon.
Religion
Religion is taught every day. It is graded as a subject. If your child is Catholic, he/she will be prepared to receive the sacrament of First Penance (usually in May) and First Holy Communion (usually in May).
Homework
Homework will be posted daily on my teacher web page. It is due the following school day, unless otherwise noted.
Tests
Spelling tests will be every Friday.
English, Science, Social Studies and Religion are not on a set day; usually two days to study for the test
Religion, Science and Social Studies-use the study guide
English-use the review pages at the end of the unit in the hardcover book to study for the test. A copy of these will generally be sent home so the children do not have to carry the textbook.
Grading Policy
Papers with a percentage mark are for a grade; some are graded with a check plus, check, or check minus at the top of the paper.
Classroom Behavior and Participation
Second grade students are expected to listen attentively, complete work neatly and on time, work independently, follow directions, show self-control, accept correction, be courteous and respectful to others, be organized and care for their property.
Birthdays
Birthday snacks should be easy to manage and clean up; cupcakes, brownies and cookies work best. Pizza Parties are no longer allowed. Please email me before your student's birthday so we can make plans accordingly.
Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June; a flyer will be sent home with the summer birthday children closer to the end of the year.
